Common Q & A's from the RDI Workshop

Hi everyone, we have compiled a few common Q&A's from our April RDI workshop and would love to share them with all of you here.

Question 1

Can you brief us on how the RDI therapy is conducted? Is the training/therapy conducted online? How frequent is the session? (能否介紹一下治療療程如何進行的?可以線上上課嗎?上課的頻率如何?)

- RDI sessions are conducted mostly through online Zoom meetings. However, the first-time RDI assessments will be an in-person session in the comfort of the child's home. You can do RDI weekly or bi-weekly, depending on your availability.

RDI 課程可透過線上Zoom或google meet等會議進行。但第一次的 RDI 評估則需要與孩子進行面對面的評估,最好是在家中進行。您可以每週或每兩週進行一次 RDI課程,可依據您的時間與需求調整。

Question 2

What is RDI's stand on stims? Is this approach suitable for older children with ASD, e.g. teenagers & adults?

- In RDI, stimming can be seen as a mechanism to regulate oneself. We encourage parents or teachers first to establish co-regulation in children through activities. Once a child is able to co-regulate with you, stimming behaviour will automatically be reduced.

The RDI approach is suitable for individuals of all ages.


Question 3

Will it be effective to switch to RDI from ABA? How will the RDI approach be applied during formal teaching time (table activities/ academics)?

- RDI fosters children's learning on experience sharing, connectedness, and adjustment to uncertainty and the unknown, which will be beneficial for children with any previous training background. The RDI-certified Consultant will guide you through how the RDI principles can be implemented into formal teaching time and daily activities.

Question 4

How different is RDI vs the Hanen approach?

- RDI has a lot of similarities with the Hanen Approach; in fact, some say they complement very well with one other. They both emphasise parents as the primary agents of change and set up interactions in everyday situations. However, Hanen is a communication program, while RDI covers more developmental domains in addition to parental readiness. Second, RDI emphasizes 'guided participation', while Hanen emphasizes the adult' follow the child's lead. We are happy to know the views of anyone who has experienced the RDI / Hanen Approach before!

Question 5

If children have little verbal skills, how do we promote their verbal skills dynamically?


- In RDI, we first want to work on building dynamic thinking and co-regulation in the child. The lack of dynamic skills may be hindering the child's language growth. However, if it's solely a pronunciation problem, it may be due to underlying oral muscles. You may seek further advice from a speech therapist on this.

Question 6

As most ASD children are on other therapies (mainly non-relationship-based programs), will RDI complement them? So the child benefits both ways (I believe that those static skills like maths alphabets are still important).

- Yes, while RDI can complement other therapies, some may work better with RDI (communication-based programs) while some others are less complimentary (behavioural-based). RDI principles can be implemented when teaching maths and the alphabet if needed. You may consult an RDI Consultant for better RDI approaches for your children.
